Living Better with Vision Loss
Dan Norris will describe the free services offered to Vermonters of all ages with vision loss in the State of Vermont. Regardless of where an individual lives, they are entitled to direct rehabilitation services to help them adapt their skills of daily living, learn to travel in the community with vision loss, and continue to pursue their interests and goals. There is always more than can be done than can’t be done. There are high and low technology solutions to help them maintain their independence and maximize their functional vision and VABVI would like to help and collaborate with other professionals to meet these Vermonter’s needs.
Short Bio of Dan Norris
Daniel Norris has served as the Director of Adult Services with the Vermont Association for the Blind and Visually Impaired since 2012. Dan has been with the agency since 2004. He is also the VRT Program Coordinator and Methods Instructor for UMass Boston since May of 2014. He received his master’s degree in Education: Special Education from Portland State University. While working as a Teacher of the Visually Impaired, Dan returned to graduate school at UMass Boston, to became both a Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) & Certified Vision Rehabilitation Therapist (CVRT). He also participated in a five-year project with the Vermont Sensory Access Project to become a Deaf Blind Consultant. Dan currently serves as the Chair of the Association for Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AERBVI) CVRT Division and recently completed a seven-year term on the AERBVI Higher Education Accreditation Council. Dan is also assisting the Vision Serve Alliance on several national committees/projects regarding policy and funding. He recently stepped down after six years as co-chair of the Subject Matter Expert Committee of Vision Rehabilitation Therapy for the Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP) and is remaining as an advisor for a transitional year. Dan Norris is visually impaired himself, having developed a juvenile form of Macular Degeneration at the age of eight. In this role he has acted as a mentor for many visually impaired individuals of all ages, in the state of Vermont and elsewhere.
